Top Play at First Waikato District U15 Tournament

Waipa 1 took out the winner’s trophy at the inaugural Waikato District U15 Girls Tournament this evening at Tamahere Park after their 5 to 2 goal victory against Waipa 2. Billed as a “nuggety” final against two evenly matched sides, the scoreline was 2 all at half-time before Waipa 1 pulled ahead in the second half to score 3 unanswered goals and take overall honours.

In the playoff for 3rd and 4th place, Hamilton emerged on top against Waipa 3 by 6 goals to 2. The Hamilton side had dominated play on the first day of the tournament to lead the rankings, but had to fight on day 2 as the other sides improved with more match time.

The District Tournament was a first for Waikato Lacrosse, the aim being to encourage and develop age-group players from around the region. Eight teams lined up in total, with 3 teams from Waipa, two from Matamata-Piako, and one each from Hamilton and Thames Valley.

“This has been a pipeline dream for us to get something along these lines going in the Waikato to provide some opportunities for you, to have tournament experience without having to travel, and to be able to play as a district within a competition” commented Waikato Lacrosse President Ursula Johnson after the finals. “We are super excited that we could get this going for you all to come and play this weekend. The level of lacrosse over the weekend for a group of U15s was amazing!”

The tournament was run with 7 players on each team, with short 10-minute halves. The action was continuous, as there was a centre draw only at the start of each half. After that, play restarted with the goalie after each goal.

The next major event for our U15 players (Boys and Girls) will be the New Zealand U15 National Tournament on 18-19th September 2021 in Auckland. The District Tournament has been a major foundation block in the preparation of the Waikato teams for the upcoming Nationals.
